Welcome to the family, Cookie!
She's a 4 year old Mini Poodle, who was owned by some friends of ours as a breeding pup. They are phasing out of breeding and asked if we would like to have her and we jumped at the chance. She's the sweetest thing ever, we are all so in love!
Three days after we got her, two neighbor dogs made it into our backyard and attacked her. Lex and I were right there but it happened so quick we couldn't prevent it. Lex immediately got down and tackled the dogs, prying open their jaws, and doing whatever he could to save Cookie. I was kicking and screaming at them while trying to reach in and grab Cookie when they let go. It was horrific. It's hard to know how long it lasted, it felt like 4-5 minutes of fighting these dogs off. Finally Lex got them off and I swooped in and grabbed her up.
We hopped straight into the truck and drove to the vet. They were amazing and took great care of her. She ended up having a 3 broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and several large open wounds (so deep they could see her liver). They gave her a feeding tube and IV antibiotics as well. They sewed her all up and she stayed there for 4 nights until she could eat and relieve herself on her own.
Here she is on Friday, the day after it happened.
And then Monday...
Tuesday she came home!
She's on strict restriction to stay in her crate so she doesn't try to run and jump with broken ribs and stitches. She's not a fan, but she is finally relaxing in her crate for longer periods of time, which we need her to do so we can leave the house every now and then too!
We are amazed she is alive and so thankful for her sweet go-with-the-flow personality! Getting a new dog is an adjustment, but this past week has been a lot! The kids love her so much though (Lex is probably the most protective of her :) so it's all worth it!
Lex and I both got bit too, mine required 3 stitches on my ring finger and Lex's was between his thumb and forefinger, a deep puncture but didn't require stitches. So glad it wasn't worse that that!
