This morning we decided to walk to a little coffee/breakfast spot just down the road from the condo. We didn't have anywhere we needed to be until their surfing lesson at 11, so we enjoyed our breakfast by the water.
Kahalu'u Bay Surf Lessons
The kids all took lessons, Lex and I would have done it too, but you could only reserve 4 people at a time, so we watched and took pictures. The 4th person in their group happened to also be from San Antonio, small world! They started their lessons at the surf shop learning the basic techniques, then they walked across the street to the water. It was a 2 hour lesson and they were all able to get up and ride a lot of waves!! So glad that we did this, it will probably be one of those things they'll talk about for years!
Lex and I sat on the beach and watched. I took a lot of pictures, but they ended up sending me pictures that were much better than mine, just ignore the watermark because I didn't purchase them (I just screenshot them on my phone).
After surfing we stopped at Da Poke Shake for lunch and another quick walk to the rocky shore before resting a little and heading back to downtown Kona for the evening!
We got dressed for the Luau and did a little tourist shopping around downtown before heading to dinner. Lex found some guys selling Lychee and passion fruit, which was a first for us!
We were supposed to check in at 5:30 for the luau so we got there a little early and the line was already super long. For future reference, get there super early and know that you if you want a lei, you have to buy it for $10 per person, which miffed me after how much we paid to go to the luau. I should have bought one though, because this picture just doesn't speak luau without leis :) Katelyn was smart and brought her own, I had one in my suitcase but forgot, oh well!
The food was delicious! I had emailed them before hand so I would know what Kyler could eat, which made his experience so much better. They had a Kahlua Pork (roasted pig) which was only seasoned with salt! So he had the pork, rice, pineapple, purple sweet potatoes (that were only cooked in coconut milk) and he even was able to eat the Hawaiian Haupia dessert, which is made with sweet potatoes and coconut milk! Drinks were included as well, so Lex and I tried the Mai Tai and the kids created some cool concoctions' with pineapple juice, sparkling water and cherries (I believe). Also for future reference, the buffet shuts down quickly so start with large portions or you may not get anymore, like me! :)
