Hawai'i - Day 5

We spotted this beach, Magic White Sand Beach, when we were driving through town and decided we needed one more beach morning before we headed to the other side of the island. Our condo had a boogie board and chairs, so we thought we'd try and beat the crowd and get there early, around 8 am.

It turned out to be Levi's favorite thing of the whole trip!! It was shallow enough to be safe, but the waves were HUGE, which made for a perfect boogie boarding beach! Surprisingly there were more people than we expected there so early, but not nearly as crowded as we had seen it before. We highly recommend! Although beware to stay on the left side of the beach because there are rocks just below the surface and Levi had a big nice bruise on his hip to prove it, ouch!!

We said goodbye to our Kona Makai Condo and headed along the southern scenic route of the island with our final destination being Volcano, HI for 2 nights.

I had done some research before we left and wrote down to stop at Paradise Meadows before going all the way to South Pointe. I'm glad we did! They had a cute little shop where we got coffee and chocolate samples, an art gallery where we bought some ocean prints for the boys bathroom, and a nice area for a picnic lunch!

We continued our drive to South Point and discovered that a lot of fishing happens here! Check out this cool fishing spot!

It is also famous for cliff jumping!! I had read online there were different heights to jump from but all we found was this giant spot! The locals were fishing and the tourists were jumping! We watched a few people jump but it was definitely too high for us! Lex talked to a few locals while we were standing around and they told him there have been a lot of people die doing this jump! Yikes!!

We walked  down a bit more and found the "Southern Most Tip of the US" as well! The entire beach was made of coral, which was incredible! The waves were HUGE again but not safe for swimming. We sat and enjoyed the view for a bit, then kept driving.

Next stop, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach! It's not only famous for it's black sand, but also for spotting wild sea turtles. They had them barricaded off so no one got too close.

From there we drove up to Volcano, HI and checked into our AirBNB. It was surrounded by rainforest. When you drove down the road you could barely see any houses for all the lush trees. It was a totally different environment from Kona, which is what we were hoping for! The house had a little apartment underneath where an older man lived full time. The kids were a little freaked out by that and had a lot of funny/scary thoughts of what might happen to us while we were sleeping the first night. Luckily, we survived and he kept to himself mostly. It was a little strange looking down into the backyard, he had tents/shade covers with some blue toned lights?! The house was great, though a little musty considering it wasn't air conditioned and we were in a humid rainforest :)

That evening we relaxed and checked out a local restaurant called the Lava Rock Cafe, it even rained on us that evening in the rainforest, imagine that! haha! We also found a small little grocery store that had some of our favorite Costco snacks, so that was a win!
